                                SEGREGATION

Between the 1870s and the 1960s, the Jim Crow Laws set up segregation in the South of the U.S.A. African-American people and white people WERE NOT ALLOWED TO (= WERE FORBIDDEN TO ) (= COULDN’T) go to the same places. For example, they HAD TO ( =WERE OBLIGED TO ) go to different schools and they WERE NOT ALLOWED TO go to the same swimming pools. Eliott Erwitt showed that Black people also HAD TO use different water fountains. So, black people and white people were separate but they were not equal.
